Airborne Detection of Gas Leaks from Transmission Pipelines by Using a Laser System Operating in Visual, Near-IR, and Mid-IR Wavelength Bands
Methane is the main component of natural gas. When released into the atmosphere, its climate impact is 25 times greater than that of carbon dioxide. In order to prevent gas leaks and the resulting harmful impact, European directives require regular inspections of natural gas pipelines using helicopters. ALMA can reliably detect even the tiniest leaks from a distance of up to 150 metres. The sensitivity of the system to leaks from ground pipelines by the laser channel is about 100 ppm*m at 100 m by methane. The IR thermographic channel plays an auxiliary role and the video channel allows better coordinate positioning of detected gas leaks in conjunction with a built-in GPS device.
